Small booklets– in this instance, 3-1/2” by 5-1/4”– held accordion-pleated pages with patterns and alphabets and were sized to tuck into a needleworker’s bag. The patterns in this book are part of a series published by H. K. Berlin SW in Germany from the 1860s to the 1880s.Designs charted on graph paper are a universal language which can be translated into needlepoint, counted cross stitch and beadwork, with each square on the pattern representing a single stitch.
